INTERNATIONAL MIGRATORY BIRD DAY

Picture
hen is IMBD? Though IMBD can be celebrated any day, the official day in Canada & the United States is the second Saturday in May.

In Latin America & the Caribbean it is usually celebrated the second Saturday in October
Because birds do not migrate on one single day, we encourage organizations to celebrate when it is best for their schedule and when birds are present. Prompting annual activities is one aspect of IMBD, but encouraging year-round awareness and education is the goal. Every day is Bird Day!

According to the nonprofit organization Annamiticus "Pangolins are considered one of the world’s most heavily trafficked mammal. These defenseless little beings are being slaughtered to extinction – simply to meet a demand based on superstitions and exploited by greed. Experts warn that the illegal trade in pangolins will render them extinct within our lifetime – yet most people have never heard of a pangolin!"

"It is estimated that more than 100,000 pangolins have been victims of the illegal wildlife trade since 2011."

                            About World Wildlife Day 2016

UN World Wildlife Day celebrates wild fauna and flora and raises awareness of the benefits that conservation provides to people.

#WWD2016 is celebrated on 3rd March, the day of the adoption of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973.

The theme of this year’s celebration is “The future of wildlife is in our hands”, with a global focus on the conservation of African and Asian elephants through the subtheme of “The future of elephants is in our hands”.

Countries around the world are encouraged to highlight species of wild animals and plants from their own countries, adapting the global theme to suit.

World Wildlife Day will be celebrated around the world, with main events at the UN Headquarters in New York.
